Simon Hackett – North-West Tasmanian Farmer

Simon was one of the team that created AARNet, the first (University Sector) version of the Internet in Australia, before founding the Internode in 1991. Twenty years later, Internode had grown to having 200,000 national Broadband Internet customers and 500 staff at the point that it was sold to iiNet. Simon joined the board of iiNet and later the board of the National Broadband Network.
For the last 15 years, Simon has been focussed professionally on solar and battery based renewable energy systems. He was a major investor in a flow battery company, and these days he has a startup called Energy Autopilot that is working on software designed to improve the operating efficiency of homes and businesses that have deployed renewable energy systems.
His family has a 200 acre farm in NW Tasmania that has a 200kW solar array and 400kWh battery system and he is on a mission to electrify everything on the farm that currently burns diesel.

What is a Microgrid?

Briefly, a microgrid is a small-scale, self-sufficient energy system that can operate independently or in conjunction with the main electricity grid. It typically consists of renewable energy sources (such as solar, wind, or biomass), energy storage (batteries), and backup generation (diesel or grid connection)
