Joint Forum To Discuss Climate Opportunities with Eden-Monaro Candidates
A CANDIDATES FORUM to discuss the importance of climate resilience to Eden-Monaro voters, and the role of renewable energy and clean technology in creating jobs and economic opportunities, will be held this Thursday, 25 June, ahead of the Eden-Monaro by-election.
Co-hosted by Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) and Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action (BSCA), the virtual forum will run from 5.30-6.30pm, and is free and open to all Eden-Monaro residents.
“Eden-Monaro farmers, many of whom have endured an extended period of extremely low rainfall, or lost their property or livestock to unprecedented bushfires, want action on climate change, which is driving worsening extreme weather,” said Jindabyne farmer and FCA member, Jo Oddie.
“From ecosystem restoration to powering our farms and communities with renewable energy, farmers are ready to drive the low-carbon solutions that will deliver immense environmental, economic and employment benefits to our region’s economy.
“We want to see all candidates bring forward a credible plan for protecting our people and economy by increasing our region’s resilience to climate change impacts, while unlocking new opportunities for job creation in renewable energy and clean technology,” said Ms Oddie.
Candidates speaking at the forum are: Kristy McBain, Labor; Cathy Griff, The Greens; and Karen Porter, Independent.
The forum will also feature presentations from Professor Lesley Hughes, Distinguished Professor of Biology at Macquarie University on the impacts of climate change, and Smart Energy Council CEO John Grimes, on the local clean energy opportunities for Eden-Monaro.
BSCA President, Jo Dodds added: “We have never had a fire season as bad as Black Summer. These fires were fuelled by climate change. Our region has paid a heavy price, from lost lives and homes to the health impacts of smoke exposure, to the impact of fires on local businesses.”
“Climate change is increasing the fire danger we face here and endangering lives, homes, businesses and jobs in Eden Monaro. Our policymakers must act.
“We want our next Federal Member to have as their top priority the health, safety and livelihoods of our communities. This means pushing for strong climate action and unlocking the job-creation potential of renewable energy through strong policy support,” said Ms Dodds.
