Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) appreciates the opportunity to provide a brief submission to the Inquiry into Nuclear Generation in Australia.

Key Points

  • Farmers for Climate Action supports technologies that reduce emissions and shift Australia’s energy system away from fossil fuels this decade.
  • Farmers need deep pollution reduction this decade to protect farms and regional and rural communities.
  • Renewable energy done right is already providing farmers with consistent long term income which makes farms more profitable and productive as climate change continues to impact agriculture.
  • FCA has heard concerns from some farmer members about competition for water resources between nuclear reactors and farming. As well as concerns around negative public perception of produce grown within proximity to nuclear generators given many of our famous farming regions built their brand on “clean and green”.

About Farmers for Climate Action

Representing more than 8,300 farmers and backed by 80,000 supporters nationwide, Farmers for Climate Action seeks deep emissions reductions this decade to protect our farmers and our food supply. FCA is made up of farmers, agricultural leaders and rural Australians advocating for strong economy wide climate policies.

The impacts of climate change are already being experienced on Australian farms, with ABARES data from 2020 indicating that climate change is costing Australian farms an average of almost $30,000 per year since 2001. Farmers want solutions that work this decade to reduce emissions and protect our farmers and our food supply. Repeating floods, fires and droughts have already become more and more common as climate change advances and continue to make farming more difficult. With the progress of renewable energy developments and the opportunity to continue their expansion while providing extra income to farmers, investment in solutions that work now is vital. It is our understanding that currently nuclear energy implementation timeframe does not align with the need to shift our energy system this decade.

Yours sincerely,
Natalie Collard
